Reproduction versus Real Vintage Tablecloths?

One of my real passions are 1940's kitchen tablecloths. I just adore them, mostly the fruit and vivid primary colored ones. Once in awhile I am lucky to snap up a real vintage one, but a lot of mine, I must confess are reproductions. I found with the real vintage ones, I didn't want to use them for fear of ruining them. So, I started buying the reproductions and enjoying them. What are your thoughts on this? How do you feel about using and possibly ruining a wonderful vintage find? I saw at at Tina Smith's blog http://cherryhillcottage.typepad.com/cherryhill_cottage/ that she had made art to put on her entry way walls with vintage tablecloths. What a great idea! I might just try that! Let me know what you think !

Morning Sandy! I honestly had no idea that there were reproduction tablecloths out there! I have a vintage one on my dining room table at all times, with placemats. Sometimes I'll put one of those clear plastic tablecloths over the top if we're having gravy ;-) I used to be the type to be afraid to use them, but with so many great ideas on getting stains out online, I say use them and enjoy them!
Have a great day!

HI Sandy,

I am a die-hard vintage linen fan but I use all of my vintage linens and occasionally if they get a spot on them, I throw them in the washer. And when they're too beat up to use on the table, I sew with them. That way they get to 'live on'. :-) -amy

I hate to use things that could get ruined. Old or new. Things that mean a lot to me. That can' be replaced. Hugs

Stopping by from the SSS to say hello!

My Meme gave me the china that she received from her wedding in the 40s when I got married. Why? Aside from the whole sentimental passing it on to her grand daughter, she said it was just sitting in a cabinet collecting dust and she knew I would use it.

If you love it, USE it! What enjoyment do you get from having it sit in the cabinet when you could be smiling during dinner with your gorgeous table cloth? Enjoy it! And if something gets spilled on it, you can always repurpose it later.

And just thinking about this makes me want to get Meme's china out and use it for dinner tomorrow. :-)

Real or repro - I love these tablecloths.
I guess I can see both sides of this 'debate' but if YOU don't use them and enjoy them - then who?

I have cut and re-purposed more vintage linens than I can count and each person that has received my custom work of art has been delighted. So many of these tablecloths have stains, tears or holes that I would rather see them enjoyed in different ways than just spend more days folded neatly away in a drawer or cupboard.

I have that red and blue reproduction tablecloth in your second photo. I just love it! Of course I never met a tablecloth I didn't like!

I would use them- isn't that the point, to enjoy them?! All of the tablecloths that you show here are so bright and cheery- use what you've got!!

I would definitely buy a reproduction, but if I found a vintge one I love I would probably be just a smidge happier! It's really the look of the tablecloth or linen that makes me happy, whether or not it is an original wouldn't matter as much. I sure love looking at yours!!!!!
Hugs,
Julie
